Tourist Faces €200,000 Fine for Throwing Boulder Off Cliff in Spain’s Picos de Europa

A young tourist is facing a substantial fine after hurling a large rock into a gorge within Spain’s Picos de Europa National Park, an act captured on video and widely condemned online

The incident occurred along the Cares Trail, a popular hiking route in the park’s northern region, frequented by approximately 300,000 visitors annually. In the footage, the man is seen lifting and throwing the hefty stone over the cliff’s edge, followed by a loud crash as it lands below. The individual and his companion are heard cheering, seemingly oblivious to the potential danger posed to hikers or wildlife beneath.

The video quickly went viral, prompting public outrage and an official response from Spanish authorities. The Civil Guard announced an investigation into the matter, emphasizing that such actions could result in fines ranging from €5,001 to €200,000. They highlighted that disturbing the environment in protected areas like the Picos de Europa National Park is considered a very serious offense.

Social media users expressed their dismay, with comments underscoring the recklessness of the act and its potential consequences. One user noted, “There are livestock farmers who pass through down there. Your little joke could’ve ended badly.” Another remarked, “You have to be a real idiot—the force and weight of that boulder could’ve smashed someone to pieces.”

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of respecting natural environments and adhering to safety regulations, especially in areas designated for public enjoyment and ecological preservation.
